Tijn Wybenga

Tijn Wybenga (1993, NL) is a composer, conductor and artistic director, working in Amsterdam. In his work Wybenga combines modern classical, jazz and electronics with improvisation, dance and theater. He draws most inspiration from the artists he works with, from all over Europe, including South Africa and Syria.

As a composer and conductor, Wybenga was New Maker for 2 years at the Bimhuis, Amsterdam. There he founded his 14-piece ensemble AM.OK (Amsterdam Modern Orchestra). An orchestra with top musicians from the Dutch jazz scene.


The debut album ' Brainteaser' (2021) was critically acclaimed in the national and international press and in April 2022, Tijn Wybenga & AM.OK won the 'Deutscher Jazz Preis' for best international debut album of the year with Brainteaser. AM.OK played at the North Sea Jazz festival and was presented several times by NTR on national television. Partly due to the showcase on 'Jazzahead!' 2022 in Bremen, Tijn Wybenga & AM.OK will tour in the Netherlands, France, Austria and Germany.


In 2018, Tijn composed the music theater performance Prikkel - commissioned by Oerol, Grachtenfestival and Oranjewoud festival. This performance explored the dichotomy between nature and technology and the struggle in our existence to balance those two elements.


In 2018, Tijn won the Rogier van Otterloo Award for best young composer/conductor/arranger.

In addition to his work as composer/conductor of AM.OK, he is composer/arranger for, among others, the Metropole Orchestra, Kamarata Zuid and the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. He is also a composer and musical director of musical theater productions by, among others, Het Noord Nederlands Toneel.
